What fits in 100 KB
100 KB is small for a modern photo but plenty for the job it usually has to do. A phone photo straight from the camera might be 3 to 5 MB. To reach 100 KB at decent quality, it typically ends up around 1000 to 1400 pixels wide, which is more than enough for a profile picture, an ID thumbnail or a listing photo shown at a few hundred pixels.
The tool works that out for you: it tries the highest quality that fits at full size first, and only then scales the photo down, choosing a size where it can stay at a good quality rather than dropping into blocky territory.
Faces and ID photos
If the form also specifies pixel dimensions, such as 600 × 600, crop to that shape and resize to those exact pixels first, then bring the result here. At 600 × 600 pixels, 100 KB allows a very high quality, so faces stay natural.
Why not just lower the quality slider?
You can, with the JPEG compressor. But every photo compresses differently, depending on detail and noise, so one slider setting gives 60 KB for one photo and 180 KB for another. Targeting the size directly gets every photo under the line in one pass.
