How to use it
- Open the image. The colour in the corners is removed straight away, since that is usually the background.
- If needed, click a different colour in the picture. Raise the tolerance to catch shadows and slight variations.
- Download the PNG.
What this tool is for
This removes a colour, not a subject. It works brilliantly when the background is a single flat colour: a logo on white, a signature on paper, a product shot against a plain backdrop, clip art, a scanned stamp. It is not an AI cut-out tool, and it will not separate a person from a busy street.
Connected area or every match
Connected area removes the chosen colour only where it touches the point you clicked (or the corners, to begin with). That protects white areas inside the subject, such as the white of an eye or the inside of the letter O in a logo that is fully enclosed.
Every match removes that colour everywhere in the image. Use it when the background shows through gaps, like the holes in the letters A, B, D and O of a wordmark, or between the lines of a signature.
Tolerance and soft edges
Real images rarely have a perfectly uniform background. Scans have paper texture; photos have slight shading. Tolerance widens the range of colours treated as background. Soften edges fades the pixels right at the boundary instead of cutting them sharply, which avoids a jagged outline and the pale halo that shows when the image is placed on a dark background.
Questions people ask
Can this remove the background from a photo of a person?
Only if they are against a plain, evenly lit backdrop. For complex backgrounds you need an AI cut-out tool or careful manual masking.
Why is there a white fringe around my logo on dark backgrounds?
The edge pixels were a blend of logo and white. Raise the tolerance slightly and keep Soften edges on.
Why PNG?
PNG supports transparency and is universally supported. You can convert it to WebP afterwards for a smaller file that is still transparent.
