Getting the framing right
This tool takes the biggest circle that fits in the middle of the image. If the face is off to one side, crop to a square around it first with the 1:1 ratio, then bring it here. Leave some space above the head; a circle trims the corners, so a tight square crop can clip hair and ears.
Why PNG
The area outside the circle has to be transparent so the image can sit on any background. JPG cannot store transparency, so the output is always PNG. If a site insists on JPG, it will fill the corners with a solid colour, usually white, which looks fine on white pages.
Do you actually need a round image?
Most social networks and chat apps already display profile photos in a circle, cropping a square upload themselves. Upload a square there instead. A pre-cut circle is most useful in places that show your image as-is: slides, documents, newsletters and websites.
Sizes that work well
For email signatures, 120 to 200 pixels across is plenty and keeps messages light. Team pages and speaker bios usually show round photos at 150 to 300 pixels, so a 600-pixel image covers high-density screens with room to spare. For slides, 800 to 1000 pixels keeps the edge smooth even on a projector. If the file is much larger than you need, the resizer will shrink it and keep the transparency.
